A new replacement dwelling is proposed within a sensitive rural community in North Hertfordshire. The design concept is to create a low-lying, single storey replacement dwelling whose mass and profile sits comfortably within the landscape, is appropriate to the agricultural heritage of the site and allows longer views over the surrounding countryside.

The layout proposes two wings of accommodation orientated approximately East/West and separated by a small external courtyard. The northern wing contains all the sleeping accommodation and the southern wing the living accommodation. The main entrance is located on the eastern façade between the two wings and leads to a connecting central hall with views through to the courtyard immediately behind and longer, countryside views beyond. There are 4 bedrooms, a small study and utility room to the North side of the building with an open plan kitchen/dining/family room and snug in the southern wing.

The building is constructed of natural stone and ceilings vaulted to increase the feeling of space although we have purposely avoided any significant breaks in the natural slate roof to emphasise and maintain the ‘agricultural barn-like’ aesthetic.

Sustainable design is a key element of the client’s brief with energy demand reduced in the first instance by passive means. Once passive measures have been maximised renewable energy technologies are introduced to reduce demand further.

Planning permission has been achieved and the project is due on site in the first quarter of 2018.
