The existing cottage is modestly sized but sited on a fairly generous plot. The proposals extend the existing building to enable three generations of the same family to live together.

In order for the relatively large extension not to overwhelm the small cottage the additional floor space has been defined in two different ways that respond to differing site contexts. The more expansive ground floor extension is designed to be largely invisible, behind a new ‘secret garden’ wall whilst the smaller first floor extension visible above responds to the architecture of the existing cottage. At ground floor the new accommodation is designed as a contemporary ‘garden building’ with timber cladding and larger areas of glazing to connect with the existing mature garden.

The building is designed to reduce energy use and includes natural ventilation, increased insulation levels, air tightness, a sustainable urban drainage system and rainwater harvesting. A green roof will also reduce rainwater run-off and encourage biodiversity.

Solar gain will be encouraged in winter, but windows will be shaded in summer by a pergola planted with suitable species that provide natural summer shade but will die back in the winter months to let the sun in.

Planning permission has been achieved construction is planned for later in 2018.
