Clients & projects: Local Distinctiveness

This 4-acre site proposes 30 homes on a fallow field on the edge of an attractive Kent village.

The design approach is developed in close response to the site context and the local character and distinctiveness of the area taking inspiration from local vernacular buildings.

An overall masterplan has been developed to carefully consider sunlight & daylight, minimise vehicle movements & car parking whilst optimising pedestrian and cycle permeability. A variety of different public spaces and landscaping design complement the architecture and enhance ecology & biodiversity.

Courtyard squares further define individual neighbourhoods with the overall development whilst green ‘buffer’ zones maintain privacy with neighbouring boundaries.

A new ‘green’ is proposed to protect existing historic earthworks and mature existing trees to the North as well as providing a focal point and identity for this part of the site.

High quality local, traditional & durable materials are proposed in combination with quietly contemporary architectural design. A range of different house types has also been developed with each responding to their particular location within the masterplan.

Pedestrian links are also proposed to link with the surrounding infrastructure & to adjacent land which is to be re-wilded as part of a wider ecological enhancement project.
