This house was built as a prototype for an exhibition held at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to explore sustainable concepts allied to affordability and offsite prefabrication.

The compact ‘upside down’ house has three bedrooms at ground level with an open plan vaulted living space at first floor. An innovative prefabricated masonry panel construction was developed allowing whole walls to be craned in and the superstructure erected in a matter of a few days which would have normally taken weeks to achieve. High insulation values, ground source heat pump technology, solar thermal systems, rainwater harvesting and sustainable drainage systems are also incorporated.

The design is intended to appear as almost a parody of a traditional ‘estate’ house box but reinterprets it in a contemporary way creating a sense of space way beyond its modest external dimensions.
